A considered, practised approach to photographing in Romsey Abbey
Romsey Abbey is an awe-inspiring church in which to get married. But it does require a thoughtful approach from your photographer.
The scale, the light and the formality of the service mean that experience matters.
Since I know the building perhaps better than any other photographer, I can work in a way that’s very unobtrusive:
- I know where the light falls in different parts of the building
- I know where and when I can move and, just as importantly, where I shouldn’t
- I anticipate key moments without needing direction
- I photograph quietly, without disrupting the service
The result for you is wedding photographs that look and feel just how you remember your wedding service – stylish and uplifting.

A calm and unobtrusive presence
You won’t be performing for my camera. In fact, you should barely notice me.
I work in a way that never disrupts the service:
- I wear a dark suit and tie to blend in with your guests
- During the service, I take photos on silent shutter from a discreet distance
- After the service, I give clear, simple direction when needed
- For portraits, I create space for you to be yourselves rather than over-directing
This approach keeps your focus where it should be – on experiencing your wedding day to the full.

Frequently-asked questions
Will the Abbey be too dark for good photographs?
Thanks to its stained glass, the east end of the Abbey is relatively dark. But particularly during the summer months, when most weddings take place, the nave is relatively light and airy, thanks to the clear glazing in the large west window. I work carefully to balance the lighting conditions and maintain the spiritual atmosphere, while ensuring you are clearly and beautifully the centre of attention.
Do weddings in the Abbey feel very formal or restrictive?
Since the Abbey is a large church, it’s naturally a more formal space than, say, a rustic barn. That said, the clergy do their best to make you feel relaxed and comfortable during your wedding. You can choose your order of service and the hymns and readings you’d like.
And in terms of restrictions, as the in-house photographer best known to everyone at the Abbey, I know all the spaces intimately and permitted a little latitude to capture the photographs I need for you.
Will photography take a long time after the service?
It need not do so – that really depends on you! Some couples want only a few formal groups; others want a lot. Either way, I choreograph them in the most efficient order, so we get through them quickly and enjoyably.
