Bride and groom kiss in front of Romsey Abbey

Hello, I'm Dom, the only photographer who knows Romsey Abbey as a genuine insider.

I've sung in Romsey Abbey Choir for years. That means I know this building in a way no other Hampshire wedding photographer does — where the light falls at different times of day, how the service moves, and exactly when and where I can work without drawing attention.

My local knowledge makes a real difference to your photographs. And it means you can simply get married, without worrying about whether your photographer knows what they're doing.

A considered, practised approach to photographing in Romsey Abbey

Romsey Abbey is one of the great Norman churches in Hampshire. It's also a serious photographic challenge — large, formal, and lit in ways that catch out photographers who don't know it.

I've photographed weddings here many times. Since I also sing in the choir, I understand the building from the inside: the order of service, the movement of light through the nave and the moments worth waiting for.

That experience means I can work without disrupting anything:

  • I know where the light falls at each point of the service
  • I know when and where I can move – and when to stay still
  • I anticipate the key moments without needing direction
  • I use a silent shutter throughout, so you won't hear a click from me

The result is photographs that feel like the day actually felt — unhurried, meaningful and real.

Let me add that I have also photographed at all of the local venues from which you might be choosing for your reception: the White Horse, Kimbridge Barn, the Potter's Heron, Ampfield Golf Club – and even Lainston House.

Thank you, Dom, the photos are amazing! It's been so nice to reminisce about the day.

A calm and unobtrusive presence

You won't be performing for my camera. Most couples tell me afterwards they barely noticed I was there.

On the day I wear a dark suit and tie, work from a respectful distance during the service, and give clear, simple direction only when it's needed. For portraits afterwards, I create space for you to be yourselves — I'm not interested in poses that don't look like you.

This is how Romsey Abbey weddings should be photographed: quietly, carefully and with real understanding of what the space means.

Frequently-asked questions

Will the Abbey be too dark for good photographs?

The east end, with its stained glass, is the darkest part of the building. But the nave — where most of the service takes place — is much lighter, particularly in spring and summer when the west window lets in a generous amount of natural light. I've photographed here many times, so I know exactly how to work with the conditions, whatever the season.

Do weddings in the Abbey feel very formal or restrictive?

The Abbey is a large, historic church, so there's a natural formality to the setting. That said the clergy work hard to make you feel comfortable, guiding you gently through the order of service.

And as the in-house photographer best known to everyone at the Abbey, I know all the spaces intimately, and how to take the best photographs for you without causing disturbance.

Will photography take a long time after the service?

That's entirely up to you. Some couples want just a few family groups; others want more time for portraits. Either way, I keep things moving efficiently so you're back with your guests quickly. Most couples are surprised by how straightforward it is.
